The Basham page

Rev. William (Bill) Basham was minister at Bethesda from 1947 to 1952. HIs son, also called Bill, has sent us photographs and news-clippings from that time, and says this:

I was born in 1940, so recollections of the period are somewhat hazy. We lived in Regent Road South, Hanley, opposite the park entrance. I attended Shelton C of E Primary School, then completed a year at Hanley High School during a period when it shared buildings with another school in Chell. I recall getting my hair cut at the barber's operated by Stanley Matthews' family; marl pits; and horse-and-cart transport from the potteries to the pits.

My parents, now deceased, remembered their period in the Potteries with great affection, and I know my mother was in contact with a number of church members for many years.

Rev. Basham held a series of 'people's services' to bring the church nearer the people. Here are some reminders of that time. (In most cases, if you click your mouse on a particular photo, you can see a considerably larger version – and will then be able to read the newspaper clippings!).
